Orange Public School is a rural school located in the centre of Orange. There are around 660 students that attend OPS.
The purpose of my placements at Orange Public School was to observe and record the way my supervising teacher ran her classroom, accommodated to student diversity, application to running records within a classroom setting and to assist with as many classroom activities that I could. Whilst assisting within the classroom I ran literacy groups, mathematic groups, art workshops and Handwriting, Narrative writing and Information Report Writing lessons. I was also asked to create simple 15 minute lessons on verbs, adjectives, synonyms and antonyms.
The characteristics of the students at Orange Public School were mainly of high socio-economic status but there are still students of low socio-economic backgrounds. Religion is a big factor at OPS with Catholic and Buddhism being the offered scriptures. Orange Public does not discriminate any students and all are welcome to attend. The school has students with Learning difficulties and conditions. The school accommodates to this with L3 learning programs, teachers aids and other such services. OPS have an aboriginal outreach program to assist with transition into school, providing unique leadership opportunities and classroom learning that accommodates to indigenous backgrounds and history.
The expectations of the community at Orange Public is that their children are provided with a rich education in a safe environment that has a zero tolerance towards bullying. The community also expects that a religious approach is considered in every day lessons. OPS show pride in their school through both their academic and their sporting achievements. Orange Public Schools motto is "Deeds not words."
