Lake Munmorah Public School is a metropolitan school with around 470 students.
At the end of my 2nd year completing my Bachelor Degree of Education, I took my first class as a teacher running lessons at Lake Munmorah Public School. I was required to complete 17 days at a 0.5 teaching load with a stage 3 classroom. My class was a mixed year group which included both year 5 and year 6 students. My task was to be regarded as a temporary staff member whilst being consistent and compliant to the AITSL standards. The lessons that I had prepared and delivered included English, Maths, HSIE, Art and PD/Health/PE. The weeks that I was set to teach at LMPS were closer to the end of the year so the students were excited to end the term and ready to begin their holidays.
During my placement my class was scheduled to go on an end of year camp but was cancelled due to bush fires. Because of this cancellation, I had the opportunity to write, set and mark an in class assignment using the cancelled camp as a learning opportunity focussing on bushfires. During this placement I also had the chance to work with a casual teacher and be a supervising staff member upon an excursion to Newcastle Museum. During my placement my supervising teacher allowed me to experiment with how i run a classroom through rules, routines, classroom layout and behavioural plans within the class. Throughout my placement I was required to team teach with neighbouring classrooms to observe and practice a combined teaching approach. I was also able to contribute to the newsletter sent home to parents every week.
The characteristics of LMPS were mainly of high socio-economic families but did included some students with difficult backgrounds. Like any school there were students with behavioural issues which was confronted with behaviour management plans and policies set by the school. The school believed highly in the importance of community. Whist on my placement there were 4 fundraising and community based events raising money for the Luekemia Foundation as well as money for a student at the school in need of a insulin pump. Further events included more family oriented events such as grandparents day and big morning tea for the scripture volunteers.
The communities expectations are to provide students with a enriching education while showing an importance to 21st century learners. LMPS provide a caring an enriching environment that caters for all students from different learning and community backgrounds.
