Beginning my third year in the K-12 course I was required to complete a 30 day placement in a high school setting, taking classes ranging from grade 7 to grade 10 with observation of stage 6 learning. During this placement I was able to take two grade 7 classes, a grade 8 class and a grade 10 class. Due to the time that my placement begun I was tasked with introducing new units of work.
For the grade 7 class I begun a new novel, year 8 a unit on fairy tales and fables and year 10 introduction to Shakespeare. I was given the opportunity to adjust my lessons and learn what worked well for myself as a teacher. I was also able to experience teaching within another KLA other then English. I picked up a grade 7 History class that was focussing on Indigenous Australia. This allowed me to focus on including Indigenous perspectives within my lessons.
During my placement I was able to participate in a staff development day in regards to the future stage 6 texts that will be studied at All Saints'. Because All Saints' College, Bathurst, is a Christian co-educational day and boarding school in the Anglican tradition, religious studies were included within weekly classes as well as chapel once a week.
The characteristics of All Saints' came from high socio-economic status families. These families however came from all across Australia as well as over seas exchanges. Different to schools I have visited in the past, there was no real behaviour problems and behaviour management came quite easily to me. Before beginning my placement there was a complete change in staffing for the english faculty and this did cause some grievances with the grade 10 students. My arrival within their classroom was unwanted however quickly changed after my first lesson and I soon felt extremely welcome. The grade 7 class were switched on from day one and were a pleasure to teach. Grade 8 was my most difficult year as they were the most restless and were not eager to have a new teacher within their classroom. I may not have been their favourite teacher but class work was always completed and they were able to submit all work I had set for them.
Like most schools there were school houses that allowed for school competitions such as debating, music, and sport. During my placement I was paired with Long house and given the chance to supervise the student run House Music festival which has been a highlight of my teaching career so far. Unfortunately Long house fell short and lost to Barton house this year.
There is a great sense of community at All Saints with families having multiple opportunities to be included within their children's education. The goal of All saints is to give the students the opportunity to improve their, Eagerness for individual excellence, Excitement for learning, Spiritual awareness, Pride in good performance, Leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship and Tolerance and acceptance of diversity.
