As outlined by AITSL the professional Standards for Teachers stipulate what teachers should know and be able to do. The standards are organised in three domains; Professional knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Engagement. Although they are arranged separately, while teaching in practice they are “interconnected, interdependent and overlapping” (ATSIL, 2014). Standards promote excellence in the teaching profession, as they set a base for identifying quality practice and a level for teachers to aspire and work towards from any career stage. They clearly outline the proficiency, skills and understandings of what is expected of teachers, so to develop quality pre-service and in-service teachers (ATSIL, 2014).
